- <p> DIED. Nestor Almendros, 61, magician with a movie camera,
- whose cinematography illuminated films including My Night at
- Maud's, The Story of Adele H., Days of Heaven and Sophie's Choice;
- of lymphoma; in New York City. The son of a Loyalist who fled
- Spain after Franco took power, Almendros studied film in Rome,
- taught Spanish at Vassar, and made documentaries in the early
- days of the Castro revolution, until he lost his film-critic
- job for publishing subversive opinions. In the 1980s he
- co-directed two scalding films, Improper Conduct and Nobody
- Listened, that itemized the torture of homosexuals and other
- renegades in Cuba.
